About

As shared decision-making has become an expected component of health care, opportunities to incorporate patients and their decision partners and improve communications with health providers is critical to both satisfaction and outcomes. Decision partners have the potential to facilitate or disrupt health-related decisions and are likely to play pivotal roles in decision-making in underrepresented groups. This session will explore challenges and discuss opportunities for improvement in family-centered treatment decision-making and care, particularly relating to interventions targeted to address existing disparities in care.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify strategies for promoting and improving family-centered treatment decision-making and care particularly among populations impacted by disparities.

  • Discuss the importance of decision partners, their role in decision-making, and opportunities to effectively support decision partners.

  • Describe the essential components of effectively facilitating decision-making with patients, decision partners, and the health care team.
