Captain LJuca Belsito, RN, MSN, CCM

United States Public Health Service / HHS/FDA/DID/OCE

RN Consultant

Captain LJuca Belsito has been a nurse in Acute Care Case Management and High-tech Homecare for 21 years prior to serving in active duty. Since being commissioned to the United States Public Health Service in June of 2001, Captain LJuca Belsito has utilized the case management skills in response to many public health emergencies, and disasters, while implementing a case management model for patients, and transitions of care.

This has been one of those years that no one could have anticipated. Registered nurse and board-certified case manager, CAPT LJuca Belsito deployed to Japan earlier this year to help locate and treat Americans displaced in local hospitals due to a COVID-19 outbreak on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

In late January of 2020, an email came from Ljuca's deployment operations seeking Case Managers to deploy. Many times it is understood and known ahead of time why teams are asked to respond to Public Health Emergencies, but this year was different. Ljuca responded to the call to service. Captain Ljuca is a Board Certified Case Manager, and has been in Nursing since 1980. Ljuca's skills in case management and patient advocacy are something that has developed over the years. There is a need for more people in these roles to help families and patients navigate through a complex healthcare system, understand insurance, and help transition from one level to another safely without being readmitted. This mission turned out to be exactly that.
