Optimizing Case Management with LGBTQ+ Client

Concurrent Session

Date: Thursday, October 17, 2024
Time: 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM

Description

The needs of the LGBTQ+ community and individuals have become increasingly apparent in light of regulatory, legislative, and social initiatives happening in the U.S. Case managers and disability management specialists need to be prepared by understanding how to work effectively, respectfully, and inclusively when providing services to LGBTQ+ clients. This means that case managers and disability management specialists must understand key terms and concepts, such as the differences between sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and the currently acceptable terms to use. They also need to understand the challenges and opportunities faced by the LGBTQ+ community and individuals in healthcare, including the historical challenges from healthcare systems, providers, and staff. Case managers and disability management specialists will learn that the LGBTQ+ community is not homogenous since clients have additional identities beyond sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Case and disability managers will also learn how to effectively communicate and interact with LGBTQ+ individuals, such as honoring identified names and pronouns, family of origin, and preferences for healthcare providers and community services.

Resources that can support inclusive LGBTQ+ health and human services will be shared. This will include books, websites, and programs that provide information, education, and resources for case and disability managers as well as for the LGBTQ+ clients that are served. This presentation can serve as a way for case managers to continue their journeys in becoming better allies to the LGBTQ+ community and individuals.
